By accessing or using StoryEngine ("Service"), operated by The Secret Squirrel Society Entertainment Group Inc. ("Company," "we," "us"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the Service. These Terms apply to all users, including free-tier visitors and paying subscribers.
StoryEngine is an AI-assisted screenwriting platform that provides writing tools, structural analysis, and generation features for film, television, and stage writers. The Service is powered by third-party AI models and is provided "as is" for creative development purposes. StoryEngine is not a substitute for professional legal, financial, or career advice.
You must provide accurate information when creating an account. Each email address may only be associated with one account. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials. You must be 18 years of age or older to create an account. We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.
StoryEngine offers paid subscription tiers (Writer, Pro, Studio, Institutional) billed through Stripe. By subscribing, you authorize recurring charges to your payment method. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled before the renewal date.
Fair use of "unlimited" plans. Plans described as "unlimited" are intended for reasonable individual human use. Automated, scripted, bulk, or otherwise abusive usage may be rate-limited, throttled, or suspended to protect Service availability and cost for all users.
Generation allowances reset monthly on your billing anniversary and do not roll over. Prices and plan details are those shown on the Pricing page at the time of purchase, and may be adjusted with 30 days' notice to active subscribers.
14-Day Money-Back Guarantee. If you are not satisfied with a paid plan, you may request a full refund within 14 days of your first charge for that subscription by emailing support@storyenginehq.com — no explanation required. This guarantee applies to a customer's first paid subscription.
Beyond the 14-day window, subscriptions may be cancelled at any time through the billing portal; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period and you retain access through the period you paid for. We do not provide prorated refunds for mid-period cancellations outside the guarantee window, except at our discretion for documented billing errors or extended service outages.
You retain all rights to creative content you input into StoryEngine. AI-generated output ("Output") produced by the Service using your inputs is provided to you for your creative use. You represent that your inputs do not infringe any third party's rights.
We do not claim ownership of your inputs or Outputs. However, you grant StoryEngine a limited, non-exclusive license to process your inputs as necessary to operate the Service. We do not use your specific story content to train AI models.
AI Outputs are generated content and may not be entirely original. You are responsible for independently verifying any Output before commercial use. StoryEngine makes no warranty that Outputs are free from third-party intellectual property claims.
Your representations. You represent that you have the rights to any material you submit, and you agree not to input scripts or other content you do not own or have permission to use. You are solely responsible for how you use any Output, including reviewing it for originality and third-party rights before any commercial use or distribution.
Originality & uniqueness. Outputs are generated and may be similar or identical to material generated for other users. We make no warranty that any Output is unique, original, or protectable by copyright; under current U.S. law, purely machine-generated material may not be copyrightable. The protectable work is the one you create through your own selection, editing, and rewriting.
Craft Profiles & named creators. Where StoryEngine references real writers or directors, it does so to identify the body of published work our research has analyzed, for purposes of study and commentary. StoryEngine is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any named writer or director, names are used solely to describe the work studied, and Outputs are not the work of, and are not represented as the work of, any such person.
Indemnity. You agree to indemnify and hold harmless StoryEngine and The Secret Squirrel Society Entertainment Group Inc. from claims arising out of your inputs, your use or exploitation of Outputs, or your breach of these Terms. To the maximum extent permitted by law, StoryEngine's total liability is limited to the fees you paid in the twelve months preceding the claim.
The StoryEngine name, logo, interface design, underlying research database, and proprietary structural formulas are owned by The Secret Squirrel Society Entertainment Group Inc. and protected by copyright and trade secret law. You may not copy, reverse-engineer, or redistribute the Service or its research database without written permission.
You agree not to use StoryEngine to:
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND. WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR THAT AI OUTPUTS WILL MEET YOUR EXPECTATIONS.
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, THE SECRET SQUIRREL SOCIETY ENTERTAINMENT GROUP INC. SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE, INCLUDING LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, OR BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM ARISING FROM THESE TERMS SHALL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNT YOU PAID TO US IN THE 12 MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM.
We may suspend or terminate your account at any time for violation of these Terms. You may terminate your account by contacting support. Upon termination, your right to use the Service ceases immediately. Vault data may be deleted 30 days after account termination.
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to conflict of law provisions. Any disputes arising under these Terms shall be resolved through binding arbitration under JAMS rules, except that either party may seek injunctive relief in a court of competent jurisdiction. You waive the right to participate in class action litigation.
